Larkhall is home to around 15,300 people in South Lanarkshire, a former mining and weaving town overlooked by Scotland's tallest railway bridge.
A viaduct built to last, a line that didn't
The disused Larkhall Viaduct stands 53.3 metres (175 feet) high, making it the highest railway bridge in Scotland. It's the most visible reminder of a line that no longer runs, in a town first recorded in journals around 1620 under the name Laverock Ha.
From mining and weaving to engineering
Larkhall grew steadily from the 1770s onwards, largely through building societies, with its early residents principally miners, bleachers and handloom weavers connected to Lanarkshire's ironworks and collieries. Those industries have mostly closed, and the town's employment has shifted towards electronics, electrical and engineering work, alongside its high street and tourism.
Why Larkhall shoppers order online anyway
None of that industrial history left Larkhall with a dedicated bulk or wholesale sweet shop, stocked for vegan ranges, halal-friendly lines or party-sized orders. For that, ordering online is the more practical option.
