Lauder's history is bound up with one family and one castle, standing just outside the town for over four centuries.
Four centuries in the Maitland family
Around 1586, John Maitland bought the Castlehill estate just outside Lauder, and the castle he built in 1590 still forms the core of Thirlestane Castle today. The Maitlands, later the Earls (and for one generation, the Duke) of Lauderdale, substantially extended the building in the 1670s, and their descendants lived there well into the 20th century.
A darker episode at Lauder Bridge
Lauder's history has its grim moments too: in 1482, a group of nobles led by Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus, hanged several of James III's favourites, including the architect Robert Cochrane, from the town's bridge.
