Sweets in Lerwick: The Market Built for Dutch Herring Fleets

Lerwick is Shetland's capital and home to around 6,700 people, a town that began life as an informal marketplace for foreign fishing fleets.

Built for the herring trade

Lerwick grew up as an unofficial marketplace serving 17th-century Dutch herring fleets, with traders working from shoreline premises known as lodberries, a term borrowed from Old Norse. Commercial Street, now the town's main shopping street, was the route connecting them, and the Market Cross at its start marks the spot — a small sandy beach before any building stood there.

A hard-won town

Lerwick's early years were rough. The straggling shoreline settlement was demolished by order of the Scalloway court in 1615 and 1625, the Dutch burnt the fort in 1673, and the French set fire to the town in 1702. What survived and was rebuilt is the warren of narrow lanes and 18th and 19th-century sandstone buildings that still lines Commercial Street.

Why Lerwick shoppers order online anyway

Commercial Street has a genuinely good range of small independent shops, but not a dedicated bulk or wholesale sweet shop with vegan or halal-friendly ranges. For that, and for about half of Shetland's population who live within ten miles of the town, ordering online is the more practical route.
