Lichfield is home to the only medieval cathedral in England with three spires — a genuine rarity that can be seen for miles around the Staffordshire countryside.
Three spires, known as the Three Ladies of the Vale
Two of the spires stand on the cathedral's west front and a third rises over the central crossing, which is why the building is affectionately known as the Three Ladies of the Vale. The Gothic cathedral seen today was begun within a century of the Norman building, and it sits on a site with a far older story.
A cathedral city since the 7th century
Bishop Chad moved the seat of his diocese to Lichfield in the 7th century, and his body was interred in a Saxon cathedral that lies beneath the present building. Lichfield also briefly held an archbishopric, from 787 to 803 AD.
