Sweets in Lisburn: The Market House That Survived the Fire of 1707, and What Bow Street Doesn't Stock in Bulk

Lisburn's population reached 51,447 at the 2021 census, making it the third-largest city in Northern Ireland.

The Market House that survived the fire of 1707

Lisburn's Market Square developed as the commercial heart of the town under Sir Fulke Conway and Sir George Rawdon, after Charles I granted the 1st Viscount Conway the right to hold a market there. A "terrible and sudden" fire tore through the town in 1707, and the Market House was the only building left standing — it's now, in modified form, the oldest surviving building in Lisburn. Bow Street, running off the square, once held 13 pubs at once and today leads to Bow Street Mall and the Georgian-fronted Lisburn Square.

Lisburn is Northern Ireland's third-largest city by population, and its market square has been continuously commercial since the 1600s — but that history is built around general trade and linen, not a dedicated confectionery landmark.

What 300 years of market history doesn't cover

A market square with 300 years of history, however genuine, isn't a bulk supplier. Nothing around Market Square or Bow Street Mall holds 3kg bulk bags, a vegan-specific range or a halal-friendly selection ready to go — that's a different kind of order to a shop on the walkable city centre.

Why Lisburn shoppers order online anyway

For bulk, dietary-specific or trade quantities, ordering online and having it delivered direct to a Lisburn address is the more consistent option than a trip round Bow Street Mall.
