Lisnaskea, the second-biggest town in County Fermanagh, takes its name from the Irish Lios na Scéithe, "fort of the shield," and was the seat of the Maguire kings centuries before its market square took shape.
Royal seat of the Maguire clan
The Mag Uidhir, or Maguire, clan ruled Fermanagh from the late 13th century and were based at Lisnaskea, with their royal inauguration site nearby at Sgiath Gabhra, now called Cornashee. Archaeological digs at nearby Castle Balfour Demesne have even uncovered a ringfort radiocarbon-dated to the 4th or 5th century AD, alongside the remains of an early monastery linked to St Ronan.
A plantation castle and a Victorian market town
The modern town took shape during the Plantation of Ulster, when Sir James Balfour commissioned Castle Balfour on the settlement's southern edge in 1618. By the 19th century, the Earl of Erne had built up the commercial heart of Lisnaskea, including the Cornmarket of 1841, the butter market and a market house.
