A new town, planned from 1962
Livingston was designated a New Town on 16 April 1962, the fourth in Scotland's post-war new-town programme, built around the existing village of the same name with the dual aim of housing overspill population from Glasgow, 30 miles to the west, and providing jobs to replace West Lothian's declining heavy industries. Its main shopping centre — originally called Livingston Regional Centre, then Almondvale Shopping Centre — opened in 1976/77, expanded with a second phase in 1995 and a third, Elements Square, in 2008, when it was rebranded simply as The Centre.
As a planned town built from the 1960s onward, Livingston doesn't have the centuries-old market or charter history that older towns in this series can draw on — its shopping centre is the modern equivalent, a mix of high-street chains rather than a historic sweet-shop name.
