Llandeilo's roots run deeper than most Welsh market towns, with a settlement believed to have existed on the site for some 1,300 years.
A town founded by Saint Teilo
Llandeilo takes its name from Saint Teilo, who founded a religious centre on the site, with the Romans having already made use of the fertile Towy Valley nearby and established a fort at what became Dinefwr Park. Written records of the town stretch back to the start of the 13th century, including the First Battle of Llandeilo in 1213 and a second battle in 1257 against a Norman army from Carmarthen.
Seat of the kingdom of Deheubarth
Dinefwr Castle, overlooking the River Tywi on a ridge just outside the town, was established towards the end of the 12th century by Rhys ap Gruffudd, known as the Lord Rhys, and served as the principal defensive centre for the medieval kingdom of Deheubarth, which once stretched across much of southwest Wales. Its circular keep, residential block and curtain wall survive within Dinefwr Park today.

Llandeilo's history is built on a saint's church and a Welsh kingdom's castle, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Carmarthenshire and the UK.
