Sweets in Llandovery: Castle Ruin With 900 Years of Sieges

Llandovery has had a castle on the mound above the River Tywi since the early 12th century, and what's left of it still looks down over the town today — a rare survivor of centuries of border warfare.

A castle built to hold the Tywi Valley

The first castle at Llandovery was raised by the Norman lord Richard fitzPons around 1116, built in timber before being rebuilt in stone to control the river crossing and the valley beyond. It changed hands repeatedly over the following centuries, captured by the Welsh ruler Rhys ap Gruffudd in 1158 and fought over again and again as power shifted between Norman and Welsh control.

An execution in front of a king

The castle's grimmest moment came during the Glyndŵr rising, when in 1403 it was besieged and, in the presence of King Henry IV himself, a Glyndŵr sympathiser named Llywelyn ap Gruffudd Fychan was executed there. The castle was burnt in the early 16th century and never rebuilt — it stands today as a Grade II* listed ruin, with a modern statue to Llywelyn ap Gruffudd Fychan at its base and centuries of visitor graffiti carved into its walls.
