Sweets in Llangollen: Britain's Longest Aqueduct, 38m Up

A short distance from Llangollen, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries a canal across the Dee valley on 18 arches — the longest and highest aqueduct in the UK.

An aqueduct that took ten years to build

Designed by Thomas Telford, the cast-iron and stone aqueduct was completed in 1805 after roughly ten years of work. It runs 307 metres in length and stands 38 metres above the river below.

A World Heritage Site since 2009

The aqueduct is Grade I listed and, together with the surrounding canal, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009, drawing walkers and canal boaters to the Dee valley.
