A canal that cut out the Kintyre peninsula
In 1801 the Crinan Canal opened nearby, linking Ardrishaig on Loch Gilp with Crinan on the Sound of Jura. It let boats cross between the Firth of Clyde and the Inner Hebrides without sailing all the way around the Kintyre peninsula, and Lochgilphead's position at the head of Loch Gilp made it significantly more important almost overnight.
From canal town to county town
Lochgilphead's later growth had less to do with the canal and more with administration: it became the seat of local government for Argyll, a role it still holds today as the administrative centre of Argyll and Bute, covering an area stretching from Helensburgh to Campbeltown and out to islands including Islay and Mull.
