Long Eaton's population grew from around 500 people at the start of the 19th century to more than 13,000 by its end, driven by two industries arriving almost together: lace manufacturing, much of which, despite the 'Nottingham lace' name, was actually produced in the Erewash area with Long Eaton as a leading contributor, and railway wagon building, after Samuel Claye opened his Manor House Works by the line in 1851 and grew it to over 800 employees producing around 1,000 wagons a year. The town remains a recognised centre for upholstered furniture manufacturing today, a trade that grew out of that textile history.
