St Annes Pier and Clifton Street
St Annes Pier opened on 15 June 1885, part of the rapid development of St Annes as a planned seaside resort from the 1870s onward. Its Floral Hall, added in 1910, once drew major entertainers, though changes to the river left the pier stranded on sandbanks and two fires, in 1974 and 1982, led to part of it being demolished. Further along the front, the Green holds a restored windmill and the Old Lifeboat House Museum.
Inland, Clifton Street — named after the family who owned the manor from 1606 — remains the town's main shopping street, with a restaurant quarter around Wood Street and Ashton Gardens restored in 2009. It's a proper independent shopping run, but not one built around bulk confectionery.
