A planned town named for an earl
Macduff started out as a small fishing settlement called Doune. In 1783, James Duff, 2nd Earl Fife, obtained a charter making it a Burgh of Barony, renamed it after his own family, and built it up around a new harbour. A bridge over the River Deveron, designed by the engineer John Smeaton and completed in 1780, still links the town to its older, royal-burgh neighbour Banff on the opposite bank — the two towns function almost as one, sharing a shoreline but very different foundings. Macduff's working harbour and its Marine Aquarium, built out over the water, remain the town's best-known landmarks today.
