Maghera, in County Londonderry, has a church ruin at its centre that's been a place of worship for close to 1,500 years, far longer than the town around it.
Founded in the 6th century, raided by Vikings in the 9th
St Lurach's Church began as a monastery founded in the 6th century by St Lurach, a figure of royal descent said to dominate religious life in Mid-Ulster at the time. The site appears in the Annals of Ulster as having been plundered by Vikings in 832, with several of its abbots killed, and it was burned again in 1135 — a long run of setbacks for a single religious site.
A carving that may be the oldest of its kind in Ireland
From the mid-12th century until 1245, the church served as the seat of a bishop before becoming an ordinary parish church, eventually being abandoned in 1819 when a new church was built across the road. What survives is the nave of the Old Church, dating from the 10th century, with a carved relief of the crucifixion over the doorway that's possibly the oldest carving of its kind anywhere in Ireland.
