Mallaig feels like it's always been there at the end of the line, but as a settlement it's barely 180 years old — carved out of a single Highland farm in the 1840s.
Seventeen plots, and a village was born
Before the 1840s there was only Mallaigvaig, a farmstead with a population of around 23. Lord Lovat, who owned the North Morar estate, divided the land into 17 parcels and encouraged tenants to resettle on the coast and take up fishing instead.
A herring boom and a railway built to match
The village grew fast once the fishing industry took hold, and growth accelerated further when the West Highland Railway reached Mallaig in 1901, giving the catch a fast route to markets across Britain. By the mid-20th century, Mallaig was one of Europe's busiest herring ports, and it remains the terminus of the famous "Road to the Isles" and the ferry gateway to Skye.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Mallaig's story is built on herring and railways, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of the Highlands and the UK.
