Markethill was founded by the Acheson family during the Plantation of Ulster, and today the village is known for Gosford Castle on its doorstep and for a drumming contest billed as the biggest of its kind anywhere in the world.
A castle built to be Ulster's largest
The Achesons were granted land here in 1610 and built Markethill, though their original castle was destroyed in the 1641 rebellion. Nearby, Gosford Castle was built for the 2nd Earl of Gosford and completed in 1859 to a Norman-revival design by London architect Thomas Hopper — a Grade A listed building said to be the largest of its kind in Ulster, now at the centre of Gosford Forest Park.
Livestock markets and the world's largest Lambeg contest
True to its name, Markethill still holds a livestock market three times a week, and each summer it hosts what's billed as the world's largest Lambeg drumming contest, drawing drummers and crowds from across Ulster.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Markethill's reputation rests on its castle and its drums, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of County Armagh and the UK.
