A stone cross once stood by the old graveyard in the village centre, topped with a carved stone unicorn's head and reputedly used in feudal times for public proclamations — part of that head is said to survive built into a neighbouring wall. A separate, older wayside cross, the Stob Cross, stands on the village's northern edge, a weathered slab marking what may once have been the boundary of an ancient church sanctuary. Nearby, the Balfarg henge and Balbirnie stone circle point to activity on this ground since the Neolithic.
