By the early 1800s, Merthyr Tydfil was the world's leading iron-producing town, and the Cyfarthfa Ironworks — built by the Crawshay family — was, for a time, the largest ironworks on earth. The town's furnaces supplied iron for railways, bridges and buildings across the British Empire.
That industrial weight also gave Merthyr a place in transport history: in 1804, engineer Richard Trevithick ran his steam locomotive along the Penydarren tramroad, hauling wagons of iron and passengers between Penydarren and Abercynon — widely regarded as the world's first successful locomotive-hauled railway journey.
