Mevagissey's twin harbour still looks every bit the working fishing port it's always been, and the village carries a specific claim to fame: it's said to be one of the first in Britain to light its own streets.
Lit by its own fish oil
Mevagissey's lamps reportedly burned oil pressed from its own pilchard catch, making it one of the earliest villages in the country with street lighting — powered, quite literally, by the harbour below it.
A pilchard port shipping 35 million fish a year
In the 18th century Mevagissey grew into the fourth-largest centre of the pilchard industry in Cornwall, curing fish for the Italian export market and shipping around 35 million pilchards a year from 1750 onwards. A medieval quay, first built in 1430, protected the fishing fleet that made this possible.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Mevagissey's history is built on pilchards and lamp oil, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of Cornwall and the UK.
