Milford Haven takes its name from the waterway it sits on, one of the deepest natural harbours in the world, and the town's own founding story is almost as striking as the geography.
One of the world's deepest natural harbours
The Milford Haven Waterway is a ria, or drowned valley, flooded at the end of the last ice age, forming the largest estuary in Wales and one of the deepest natural harbours anywhere. It has been used as a sheltered port since the Middle Ages, and Henry VII himself landed there in 1485 before marching on England to claim the throne.
Founded by a whaling community from Nantucket
The town itself was founded in 1790 by Sir William Hamilton, who intended it as a whaling centre, and Quaker whaling families from Nantucket made it their home port through the late 18th century. In 1802 Lord Nelson visited and declared it one of the finest harbours he had ever seen, though the whaling trade itself had declined by 1819.

Milford Haven's history is built on whaling fleets and a famously deep harbour, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Pembrokeshire and the UK.
