Millport, the only town on the Isle of Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde, is home to a cathedral so small it's easy to miss — and so distinctive it's one of the most unusual religious buildings in Scotland.
A cathedral built for barely a hundred worshippers
Designed by the architect William Butterfield and completed in 1851, the Cathedral of the Isles seats only about 100 people, making it the smallest cathedral in Great Britain. It was built as part of a theological college for the Episcopal Church and still serves as the cathedral for the Diocese of Argyll and The Isles today.
A Norwegian king's camp, centuries earlier
Long before Butterfield's cathedral, Great Cumbrae had already seen history pass through: in September 1263, King Håkon IV of Norway made his headquarters on the island, camping at Tomont End ahead of the Battle of Largs across the water.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Millport's history is built on a tiny cathedral and a Norwegian king's campsite, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Ayrshire and the UK.
