Stand in Moffat's High Street and you'll find yourself being watched by a ram — a large bronze one, missing both its ears, perched on top of a Victorian drinking fountain.
A statue built on the wool trade
Sheep farming was central to Moffat's economy for centuries, with the area known for breeding blackface sheep and weaving their fleece. In 1875, local businessman William Colvin commissioned a sandstone fountain topped with a bronze ram as a gift to his native town, commemorating that long association with sheep and wool.
The ram that lost its ears
The ram's ears have been missing since the statue was first presented, a quirk that's become part of the town's identity. Moffat's development actually rested on three separate trades — sheep, its role as a staging post on the road between England and Edinburgh, and a spell as a fashionable spa town — but it's the ram that still greets everyone passing through the square.
