Morecambe's seafront is dominated by one of Britain's most celebrated Art Deco buildings, built by a railway company determined to create something genuinely modern.
A curved building built to echo the bay
The Midland Hotel was built in 1933 by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway to replace an earlier Victorian hotel, with architect Oliver Hill designing a three-storey curving building in the Streamline Moderne style, complete with a circular entrance tower and spiral staircase. Hill oversaw every detail, from the structure down to the door handles, aiming to create the first truly modern hotel of the 1930s.
Eric Gill, Eric Ravilious, and a visitor who flew in for tea
The hotel's interior featured sculpture by Eric Gill and murals by Eric Ravilious, and its guest list reportedly included Wallis Simpson, Noël Coward and Laurence Olivier. Coco Chanel is said to have flown in from the French Riviera and landed her flying boat in Morecambe Bay to take tea at the hotel. After closing in 1998 and standing empty for almost a decade, the Midland was restored by developer Urban Splash and reopened in 2008.
