The Ravenscraig steelworks, completed in 1957 at a cost of £20 million, was once one of the largest integrated steel plants in Western Europe, spanning around 1,200 acres between Motherwell, Carfin and Wishaw. It closed in 1992 and was demolished in 1996, and the site sat derelict for over two decades before redevelopment into one of Europe's largest housing projects began. It's still the single fact most people know about Motherwell.

The town's retail core is Motherwell Shopping Centre, previously known as Brandon Shopping Centre and Brandon Parade before a redevelopment completed in October 2013.
