Mousehole is a granite-cottage fishing village on Mount's Bay with a history that includes one genuinely brutal night: in July 1595, Spanish raiders burned almost the entire village to the ground.
Burnt to the ground, bar one house
Four Spanish galleys carrying roughly 200 soldiers landed near Mousehole and set fire to the village. Every building was destroyed except the 15th-century Keigwin Arms, which still stands on the harbourside today as the village's oldest building.
One of west Cornwall's most important fishing ports
Before the raid, records from around 1267 already show Mousehole as the most important fishing port in Mounts Bay. Pilchards were being exported to France from the village as early as the 14th century, with a fleet that outgrew neighbouring Newlyn and Penzance.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Mousehole's history is built on fishing fleets and a 16th-century raid, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of west Cornwall and the UK.
