Mumbles sits at the western end of Swansea Bay, and it holds a genuine claim to transport history: the world's first passenger railway service.
The world's first fare-paying passenger railway
The Swansea and Mumbles Railway began carrying fare-paying passengers in 1807, running on horse-drawn carriages along a route originally built to move limestone. It's widely credited as the world's first fare-paying passenger railway service, decades before steam trains became common.
A lighthouse that's stood since 1794
Mumbles Lighthouse has guided ships past the Mixon Shoal since 1794, after an earlier half-built structure collapsed in 1792. Built to designs by local architect William Jernegan, it's one of the oldest working lighthouses in Wales, and a fort was later added on the headland in 1860 against a feared invasion by Napoleon III.
