There's more than one Newburgh in Scotland; this is Newburgh in Fife, on the south bank of the Tay, whose population stood at around 2,020 at the 2022 census.
A market charter from an abbey
Newburgh grew up beside Lindores Abbey, founded around 1191 at the town's eastern edge by David, Earl of Huntingdon. In 1266, the monks secured permission from Alexander III to establish the settlement as a burgh with its own weekly market, and Newburgh went on to become the market town for much of north Fife, helped by having the only harbour in the area. The abbey itself was wrecked by a Reformation mob in 1559 and its ruins were later quarried for building stone, but in 2017 a new distillery opened on the abbey site, producing whisky where the monks are said to have once distilled an early form of aqua vitae.
No sweet shop, old or new
We found no dedicated sweet shop currently trading in Newburgh. Its industries — linen, jute, linoleum, salmon fishing — have mostly closed over the past century, and quarrying and the distillery are now the town's main employers; most working-age residents commute to Perth, Dundee or Glenrothes.
What that leaves out
With no specialist confectioner in the town, there's no local source for bulk bags, a vegan or halal-friendly range, or trade cases for a business or event.
Why "sweets near me" in Newburgh still points to a delivery
For a town this size on the Tay, a delivery straight to the door remains the more consistent option.
