Newcastle Emlyn takes its name from a castle that, unusually for the area, was raised by a Welsh lord rather than a Norman one.
Built by a Welsh lord, not a conqueror
The castle was probably built around 1240 by Maredudd ap Rhys, set on a tight loop of the River Teifi that gave it natural defences on three sides. It was strengthened in the 14th century before being damaged in the 15th and finally ruined during the Civil War.
A medieval market borough
A settlement grew up outside the castle gates, and in 1303 it was formally granted borough status along with a weekly market and two annual fairs — rights that shaped the town for centuries. The built-up area straddles the Teifi, with Adpar on the Ceredigion bank and the rest in Carmarthenshire.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Newcastle Emlyn's history is built on a castle and a market charter, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Carmarthenshire and the UK.
