Newmachar's population stood at around 2,530 at the 2020 estimate, a village about ten miles north-west of Aberdeen.
Renamed in 1928
The village began life as Summerhill, taking its current name from the parish of Newmachar, created in 1609 from part of the parish of St Machar's Cathedral in Aberdeen; the village itself wasn't renamed to match until 1928. It once had its own railway station, opened in 1861 by the Great North of Scotland Railway and closed in 1965, and a parochial poorhouse, built in 1854 and demolished in the 1960s. Today the village is served by a couple of shops, a bakery, a chip shop, a pharmacy and two pubs — one of which, the Newmachar Hotel, was named Evening Express Pub of the Year in 2010.
No sweet shop among them
None of Newmachar's handful of shops is a dedicated sweet shop. It's a village built around everyday essentials rather than specialist retail.
What that leaves out
With nothing locally specialising in sweets, there's no obvious source in the village for bulk bags, a vegan or halal-friendly range, or trade cases for an event or a business.
Why "sweets near me" in Newmachar still points to a delivery
With Aberdeen's wider shops a drive away, a delivery straight to the door is usually the more convenient choice.
