Newport has a genuine claim to British confectionery history. George Frederick Lovell, who'd learned the trade from age 15, founded G.F. Lovell & Co in Newport in 1884, based on Commercial Street. The business grew into one of Britain's largest sweet makers, famous for Toffee Rex — marketed as the "King of Toffees" — and the much-loved Milky Lunch bar, with Lovell himself becoming president of the UK's Confectioners' Association in 1913. The Newport works even turned to munitions production during the First World War when sugar shortages hit the trade. Today the factory is gone, but Newport's independent shops, including stalls in the reopened Victorian Newport Market, carry the sweet-making tradition forward.
