Sweets in Newry: The Butter Crane and Canal Trade

Newry's population is around 27,000, and its place names still spell out a trading history that runs back well over two centuries.

The Butter Crane, and 200 Years of Canal Trade

In 1807, Lord Kilmorey had a butter crane erected beside the Newry Canal at Merchants Quay — a quality-testing station where butter was graded, weighed and taxed before export to Liverpool. Street names like Buttercrane Quay, Canal Boat Street and Custom House Quay still mark out a 19th-century city built around merchants, markets and a busy canal-side port.

Buttercrane and the Quays

That history gave its name to Buttercrane Shopping Centre, which has traded since November 1988 and now holds more than 50 stores including Primark, Dunnes Stores and Lidl. Since 1998, The Quays Shopping Centre has stood alongside it on the canal, and between them they're Newry's main retail draw — general chain retail, though, not a specialist sweet shop.

What the Canal-Side Centres Don't Stock

Buttercrane and the Quays are built for everyday high-street shopping, not 3kg bulk bags, vegan-specific ranges or trade cases assembled for an event — that's a gap that still means ordering online.
