Newtyle's population stood at around 770 at the 2022 census, a small Angus village about eleven miles north of Dundee.
Built for a railway, not the other way round
Newtyle is unusual in that the village came after the railway, not before it. It was laid out in 1832 on a regular grid plan on land belonging to Lord Wharncliffe, built to take advantage of the Dundee and Newtyle Railway — Scotland's first commercial railway, which opened in 1831 and used Newtyle as its northern terminus, reached by rope-hauled inclines up from Dundee. A deviation opened in 1868 bypassed the original steep incline, and the old terminus was converted into a goods shed. Railway historians consider that building, still standing today, to be probably Britain's oldest surviving trainshed; it's B-listed, and was approved for conversion into six homes. The line itself closed to passengers and goods in 1955.
No sweet shop alongside it
We found no dedicated sweet shop trading in Newtyle. It's a small village built originally around industry and transport links, rather than specialist retail.
What that leaves out
With no sweet shop in the village, there's nowhere local for bulk bags, a vegan or halal-friendly range, or trade cases for a business or event.
Why "sweets near me" in Newtyle still points to a delivery
With the railway long gone and Dundee a drive away, a delivery straight to the door is the simpler option for most of the village.
