Otley is where the Wharfedale printing press was designed and built in the mid-19th century — a machine that went on to be exported around the world.
A press that changed printing
The stop-cylinder Wharfedale was made in Otley by Dawson, Payne & Elliott and revolutionised high-speed, high-quality printing. By 1911 over 2,000 people were employed at the various sites in the town making these presses.
Chippendale and the Chevin
Otley is also the birthplace of the cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, born in 1718, and stone quarried from the Chevin, the hill overlooking the town, was used in building the Houses of Parliament.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Otley's history is built on printing, furniture and quarrying, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of West Yorkshire and the UK.
