Sweets in Peebles: Neidpath Castle, Mary Queen of Scots

Peebles has a population of around 9,000 and sits right on the River Tweed — a setting that's given the town one of the best-preserved tower houses in the Borders.

Neidpath Castle

A mile west of town, Neidpath Castle is a 14th-century L-plan tower house overlooking the Tweed, remodelled in the 16th century. Mary, Queen of Scots stayed there in 1563, and her son James VI followed in 1587. During Cromwell's invasion of Scotland in 1650, the castle held out through one of the longest sieges anywhere south of the Forth before it finally surrendered.

A Market Town on the Tweed

Peebles' High Street still functions as a proper market town centre, built around independent shops rather than a shopping centre or retail park — charming for a browse, but not set up to hold 3kg bulk bags or a halal-friendly range for a school fair.
