Peterlee is a planned town, designated in 1948 — and for more than two decades its planning included an artist working directly on the street design.
A new town built for the coalfield
Peterlee was designated in 1948 as one of the first wave of post-war new towns, built to house families from the Durham coalfield. The original masterplan, by architect Berthold Lubetkin, was rejected as unsuitable for ground weakened by mining, and Lubetkin resigned in 1950; a plan by George Grenfell Baines was accepted in its place.
An artist who redesigned the streets
From 1954, the artist Victor Pasmore spent 23 years working alongside the town's planners, an involvement unparalleled in British new town design. His best-known contribution, the Apollo Pavilion on the Sunny Blunts estate, was completed in 1969 and was given a Grade II* listing in December 2011.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Peterlee's history is built on post-war planning and public art, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of County Durham and the UK.
