Sweets in Porthcawl: Coney Beach's Century on the Sand

Porthcawl began life as a coal-and-iron harbour, but it's the seafront amusement park that opened on its beach around a century ago that most people associate with the town.

From coal harbour to seaside resort

Porthcawl was built in the 19th century as a harbour shipping coal and iron from the Llynfi Valley, and reinvented itself as a holiday resort once the larger docks at Barry and Port Talbot took over its trade. The name itself comes from the Welsh for harbour, porth, and cawl, thought to refer to the sea kale that once grew along the shore.

A century of Coney Beach

Coney Beach Pleasure Park opened around 1918, reputedly built to entertain troops returning from the First World War, and took its name from the larger Coney Island amusement park in New York. It boomed through the 1950s and 60s as the M4 brought in visitors from across Wales, before permanently closing in October 2025 after more than a hundred years on the sand.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
