Work began in 1811, using a workforce that included prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars, and the harbour finally opened in August 1825 with a feast of roast beef and plum pudding for the whole village.
A fishing port, then a landmark clock tower
Porthleven's name likely comes from the Cornish for a level or smooth harbour, and for generations the port lived on pilchards and mackerel. The Bickford-Smith Institute, built in 1884, still dominates the harbourfront with its clock tower, now one of Cornwall's most recognisable landmarks.
