Porthmadog didn't exist before the 19th century — the town was built from scratch after an ambitious piece of engineering reshaped the estuary.
A town built on reclaimed land
William Maddocks built the Cob, a sea wall, in 1810 to reclaim land from the Glaslyn estuary for agriculture. Diverting the river in the process scoured out a deep-water harbour, and the first public wharves opened in 1825.
The port that shipped a mountain of slate
Porthmadog grew into one of the busiest slate ports in the world, exporting stone from the quarries at Ffestiniog and Llanfrothen to roof houses across Britain and beyond. By 1873, more than a thousand ships carrying over 116,000 tons of slate left the harbour in a single year.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Porthmadog's history is built on sea walls and slate ships, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Gwynedd and the UK.
