The "metropolis of the Fylde"
Poulton's parish church dates back to around 1090, and the town grew into the ecclesiastical and commercial centre of seven surrounding townships. By 1837 it was being described as the "metropolis of the Fylde", with cattle and cloth markets, a weekly Monday fair, and from 1847 a fortnightly cattle fair supplied by Irish dealers through the new port of Fleetwood.

The market place still contains the town's market cross, stocks, whipping post and fish slabs. The stocks, dated to the 1700s, were removed in the 1930s and reinstated, then removed again in the 1970s after repeatedly being hit by cars — they remain a fixture of the square today.
