Sweets in Prescot: 300 Years of Watchmaking, and a Small Town's Sweet Shop Gap

Prescot, in the Knowsley borough of Merseyside, had a population of around 12,800 at the 2021 census — a small market town rather than a large one, but with an outsized industrial history.

A town of little workshops

Prescot doesn't look like an obvious centre of precision engineering, but from the early 17th century it became exactly that: for the best part of 200 years, the town and the surrounding area supplied watch movements, tools and components to the London trade. It earned the nickname 'a town of little workshops', because the different parts of a watch — springs, pinions, screws cut to extraordinary tolerances — were made in small workshops attached to ordinary houses rather than in one large factory.

That changed with the Lancashire Watch Company, whose factory had its foundation stone laid in 1889 and opened officially in 1890, bringing the trade under one roof and becoming one of Prescot's largest employers. The town's watchmaking and coal-mining history is now the focus of Prescot Museum, established in 1982.

What that history doesn't leave behind

Prescot's watchmaking heritage didn't translate into a confectionery trade, and as a small town it doesn't have a dedicated sweet shop set up for bulk bags, vegan-specific ranges or halal-friendly lines — that's simply not the kind of retail a town this size tends to support locally.
