Princetown is the highest town on Dartmoor, and it exists almost entirely because of the prison built on its doorstep.
A prison built for French prisoners of war
Construction of Dartmoor Prison began in 1806 and was finished within three years, built to house French prisoners of war from the Napoleonic Wars. It filled quickly, holding more than 6,000 French prisoners, and later took American prisoners during the War of 1812.
One of Victorian England's most feared prisons
Disease swept through the cramped buildings, and more than 11,000 French and 271 American prisoners died there before the war prisoners left in 1816. The prison reopened for convicts in 1850 and, by Victorian times, had a reputation as one of the hardest prisons in England.
