Prudhoe's castle has a claim no other fortress in Northumberland can make: it never fell.
A Norman stronghold on the Tyne
Prudhoe Castle began as a Norman motte castle in the late 11th century, built as the administrative centre of a barony granted by William the Conqueror to the Umfraville family, on the south bank of the River Tyne.
The castle that held the line
Prudhoe survived two sieges in the 1170s, making it the only castle in Northumberland to successfully resist the Scots. It later passed to the Percy family, who added a Georgian mansion within its walls in the early 19th century.
