Sweets in Rhuddlan: Castle, and the River Edward I Rerouted

Rhuddlan's castle is well known. The engineering project that let ships reach it is less so, and it's one of the more ambitious construction jobs of medieval Britain.

A castle built to be reached by sea

Work on Rhuddlan Castle began in September 1277 under the Gascon engineer Master Bertram, with Master James of St George taking over construction around six months later. Building continued without a break until March 1282, producing one of the first links in what became Edward I's ring of North Wales castles.

The river that was moved to serve it

To get seagoing vessels up to the new castle, around 1,000 labourers canalised a new channel for the River Clwyd, roughly two miles long, so that supply ships could sail in directly from the sea rather than relying on the old, shallower course — one of the largest civil engineering works of the period.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Rhuddlan's history is built on castles and rerouted rivers, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Denbighshire and the UK.
