Richmond Castle was begun in 1071, within a few years of the Norman Conquest, by Alan Rufus, and its great stone keep — added around a century later — is one of the oldest surviving stone castle keeps in England, still standing over 100 feet above the River Swale. The castle overlooks the town's cobbled market place, one of the largest in the country, which has been the commercial heart of Richmond since medieval times.
