Richmond Park
At just over 2,500 acres, Richmond Park is the largest of London's Royal Parks, more than twice the size of the next largest. Its royal history goes back to the 1200s, when the area was known as the Manor of Sheen; Henry VII renamed it Richmond around 1501 after his own title, Earl of Richmond, and Charles I enclosed the land as a deer park in 1637, allowing public access even then. Red and fallow deer still roam it today, but there's no sweet shop among the oaks.
Richmond Green
A mile or so north, Richmond Green is a wide expanse of grass ringed by Georgian townhouses, independent galleries and pubs, with the remains of Richmond Palace — where Elizabeth I died in 1603 — at one corner.
