Following the defeat of his rebellion at the Battle of Sedgemoor in July 1685, the Duke of Monmouth fled south in disguise. He was found a few days later hiding in a ditch near Ringwood, in the New Forest, and was arrested a short distance from the town before being taken to the Tower of London, where he was executed.
