Rostrevor sits on Carlingford Lough beneath a 50-tonne boulder that, according to Ulster legend, a giant once threw clean across the water.
From Castle Rory to Rostrevor
Rostrevor was known in the 16th century as Castle Rory, after Rory Maginnis, who built a stronghold on the shores of Carlingford Lough. The Trevor family acquired the land from the Magennises in the early 17th century, and the name Rostrevor — combining the Irish ros, 'wooded headland', with the Trevor name — came into use from 1618.
The Cloughmore Stone
High on the slopes of Slievemartin above the village sits the Cloughmore Stone, a 50-tonne granite boulder. According to Ulster legend, the giant Finn McCool hurled the boulder across Carlingford Lough during a fight, and it landed where it still rests today.
