The Royal Pump Rooms, since 1814
The Royal Pump Room and Baths opened in July 1814, designed and built by C.S. Smith of Warwick at a cost of £30,000. Its Regency assembly room and 20 baths made it the largest and most prestigious of Leamington's spa bathing houses, and within months of opening it was already being extended to cope with demand — a second phase completed in 1816. It went on to be rebuilt in 1861 and altered again in 1887, 1910 and 1926, remaining in use for spa treatments right up until the 1990s.
Unlike Newcastle's Grainger Market or Glasgow's Barras, Leamington doesn't have one long-running flagship confectioner attached to its landmark — the Pump Rooms were built for taking the waters, not selling sweets.
