Sweets in Ruthin: The Red Castle That Named the Town

Ruthin's name is a description. It refers to the red sandstone castle that still dominates the town, and the colour that gave the place its identity centuries before anyone wrote it down.

A castle built from the ground it stands on

A wooden fort stood on the site until 1277, when Edward I had it rebuilt in local red sandstone and granted it to Dafydd, brother of Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. The castle passed to the Marcher Lord Reginald de Grey in 1282, whose family held it for the next 226 years.

A market town for seven centuries

Under the de Greys, Ruthin grew into a prosperous market town, with charters establishing markets and fairs that drew English settlers to the area. Owain Glyndŵr burned the town to the ground in 1400 during his rebellion, leaving only the castle standing — yet the market tradition, rooted in that 13th-century borough charter, continues today at Ruthin Market Hall.
